Teacher: Ebenezer Gabriels
We take a look at the ministry of John the Baptist, the man whose ministry laid the foundation of the Gospel that we now enjoy today.
Who was John the Baptist?
He was a cousin of Jesus who was a Prophet and given a special assignment by the Lord.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not the Light, but was sent to bear witness to that Light. John 1:6-8
“And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. he will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the pst, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord”. Like 1:17
John was sent ahead of Jesus to prepare for the entrance of the gospel. He was sent by God to prepare the people to receive the message of Jesus and enjoy salvation. He was sent ahead to prepare for the miracles to come. His role was to get people ready for the message of Jesus.
Jesus is the Light, and John was called to give testimony about the Light,so that when the Light comes, people would believe. He became a witness who gave an advanced evidence of the authentic of the ministry of the Lord Jesus.
Ministry Without Miracles Staying in His purpose
John understood his purpose, he stayed with the mission and did not deviate from him. John had the spirit and power of Elijah upon his life - that means he could call fire down from heaven, he could order the rain not to fall, but He did not. But he did not work outside his purpose. He spent his entire ministry preparing the way for the Lord. John performed no signs and wonders throughout his ministry.
John 10:41: Then many came to Him and said, “John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this man were true.”`
Although he had the power to do things Elijah did, he did not use his power in the way Elijah did. He used the power to baptize people unto repentance and prepare them to receive the Lord. In whatever capacity you are spreading the gospel, the power of the Holy Spirit is needed for you to accomplish that mission. It is also important to catch the vision and hold onto what we are called to do and not go out of focus.
How does this relate to us today?
Lucifer stopped allowing worship to flow through him wanted worship to flow to him directly. Jesus is the Light, but many prefer to be the Light today. Many do not want to be the witness of Light. It can be so tempting when God begins to use us for His work to want to get out of our roles and become that Light. The enemy tries hard to push people into the depths of pride. Every individual must understand that we are all human and must put our flesh under constant subjection.
Like John, who was not afraid of competition. We all are laborers of one Kingdom, the Kingdom of God. A very good example is this
Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”. The two disciples heard him speak and they followed Jesus - John 1:35-37
When Jesus began his ministry, Jesus’ firsts disciples were the disciples of John. When the two disciples heard and recognized what John had been preparing them for, they knew that it was time to be reconnected back to the Light. John did not become upset that his disciples went with Jesus. In fact, it was a moment of success for his ministry.
